About the Competition

The 1st GNLU-LSC National Essay Competition 2026 is being organised by the GNLU Legal Services Committee as part of the 2026 edition of Abhilekh, the newsletter of the GNLU Legal Services Committee. The competition aims to encourage critical discussion on the legal, institutional and socio-economic dimensions of legal aid and access to justice.

“Legal Aid and Access to Justice”

Participants are encouraged to examine barriers that prevent individuals and communities from understanding, claiming and enforcing their legal rights.

Eligibility

The competition is open to all undergraduate students across India. Participants may submit their essays individually or with one co-author.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions must be original and unpublished and should maintain a plagiarism similarity of not more than 10%. Essays must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format, using Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1.5 line spacing and justified alignment.

The manuscript must remain anonymous and should not contain the author's name, institutional affiliation or contact details. Relevant legal authorities, cases, statutes, articles and reports should be appropriately hyperlinked.

Registration Fee

Single-author submission: ₹200

Co-authored submission: ₹300

Co-authorship is permitted for a maximum of two authors.

Prizes

First Position: ₹8,000

Second Position: ₹5,000

Third Position: ₹3,000

Total Cash Prize Pool: ₹16,000

Objective

The competition seeks to promote research and informed dialogue on strengthening legal aid and access to justice, particularly by examining economic, social, institutional and technological barriers to meaningful access to legal remedies.
