The Xavier Society of Law and Justice at St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, is organising the Third Edition of the Ignatius Trial and Advocacy Competition (IGNITAC’26) from November 4 to 6, 2026. This national-level competition is designed to provide law students with practical exposure to criminal trial proceedings and courtroom advocacy.
Unlike conventional moot court competitions, IGNITAC’26 focuses on the stages of a criminal trial. Participants must analyse a detailed trial proposition, prepare their case strategy and present arguments through opening statements, examination-in-chief, cross-examination and closing arguments before an adjudicatory panel.
The competition aims to develop participants’ advocacy, evidence analysis, legal research, witness examination and trial strategy skills.
The competition centres on a complex circumstantial-evidence problem involving allegations of:
Murder
Attempted murder
Destruction of a dwelling by fire
Criminal conspiracy
Common intention
The proposition incorporates multiple evidentiary and legal issues, including:
Motive and witness identification
Test Identification Parade (TIP)
Digital communications and electronic evidence
Forensic recoveries and medical findings
Seizure records and witness statements
Evaluation of circumstantial evidence and the requirement of an unbroken chain of circumstances
Participants will be required to analyse competing factual narratives, assess the available evidence and construct persuasive arguments for their respective cases.
The competition is open to students enrolled in recognised law schools, colleges, universities or institutions that meet the eligibility requirements specified by the organisers.
Eligible participants include:
Students pursuing a three-year LL.B. programme.
Students pursuing a five-year integrated LL.B. or other integrated law programme.
Students pursuing an LL.M. programme.
Students from any year or semester may participate. Cross-semester and cross-institution teams are permitted.
A maximum of two official teams per university or college may participate. Independent teams are also permitted.
Registrations will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to the competition's intake capacity.
Each team must consist of exactly three members, with the following designated roles:
Speaker 1
Speaker 2

The roles cannot be changed after registration is confirmed, except at the discretion of the Organising Committee.
IGNITAC’26 will be conducted entirely in offline mode. Participants will engage with the trial proposition and present their cases through the principal stages of a criminal trial, including:
Opening statements
Examination-in-chief
Cross-examination
Closing arguments
The format requires participants to develop a coherent trial strategy, work with documentary and forensic evidence, examine witness accounts and respond to competing interpretations of the facts.
